the most important number may be romney's 47%. the deep dive down memory lane for the good, bad and ugly of the modern presidential debate, the winners, losers, zingers and the awkward that help decide. good morning from the university of denver. a beautiful campus here, debate day, wednesday, october 3. this is "the daily rundown." i'm chuck todd. let's get to my first read. everything has been said about the importance of tonight's debate. now it is up to the candidates themselves who will meet on the university of denver on the same stage. romney has inched up slightly in our "wall street journal" poll. the bad news when you dig deeper you see the structural problems facing romney as he tries to catch up and how damaging the 47% remark was and is to the campaign. is there such a thing as a commanding lead? if so he has it. president obama's job approval rating is at 49%. 48% disapprove of his performance. 40% believe the country is headed in the right direction. the highest number we recorded in 3 1/2 years. 53% still believe t

why didn't -- first do you agree it was a false statement by romney and second, if so, why didn't the president attack it as such? >> clearly false. strangest moment i had ever heard where you have a presidential candidate promising to veto his own economic agenda. it is just very, very strange. we're all talking about that today, too. i think that the president you know you open up the debates. you actually -- the president -- let the challenger get some punches in. i think by repeatedly and boldly and flamboyantly lying about his positions, romney leaves himself open much the same way paul ryan did after his convention speech to -- you know, this is a mendacious person. because the other thing about romney last night is he came across as incredibly smart. this is a guy who clearly knows better. this is a guy who is clearly shading the truth because he can. not because he's ignorant or somehow doesn't quite grasp his own policies like we might have thought george w. bush had trouble with. >> eliot: you're right. romney came across as smart. that's what affected it. doug, my question

the problem for romney, and vice presidential nominee ryan noted this, is that it's not just about a referendum about the president. because if that's the case, obama wins that in new hampshire, by a narrow margin. >> and medicare, of course, a huge factor across the country, or what the democrats have referred to as mediscare in some cases. in new hampshire, one in three residents is a baby boomer. does that give president obama a natural edge there? >> yeah, it's interesting. in a lot of states, and we've seen some polling out of other states that we've looked at this past week in "the washington post." and a lot of states especially where there are seniors or people who are going to be seniors and drawing on medicare soon, they are less favorable to a ryan-style plan that would eventually turn it into a voucher program, than other younger voters might be. and general people don't seem to favor changing the medicare program. it seems to be working, especially for people who have it now. but especially when you get to some of the older voters, it's just very interesting. and dante a

when the polls were particularly dire for the republican presidential candidate mitt romney in the election, presidential election polling this past month conservatives decided these polls showing an american electorate that is choosing president obama over mitt romney, these polls made them feel so uncomfortable they decided to develop a new fantasy electorate that they would poll in theory and their fantasy electorate which is not the real electorate would give them a much more comforting list of results in terms of their fake polls. it was the same dynamic at work when they invented conserve-a-pedia. something you read about the world on wikipedia, if it makes you uncomfortable as a conservative, conserve-a-pedia is guaranteed to only contain information that makes you feel okay. if you are discomfited by the idea the human species is a result of millenia of evolution for example conserve-a-pedia has you covered. don't worry. not only has conserve-a-pedia been debunked by the obvious fact that humans and dinosaurs co-existed, but in fact according to conserve-a-pedia dinosaurs are actual
